The REAL Truth About Washing Your Swimwear

Most of us get a new suit every summer. This year, don’t be afraid to invest in a quality suit. At Hangers Cleaners garment cleaning we help beach enthusiasts keep their swimwear looking brand-new.

Taking care of your swimwear starts the moment your fun in the sun ends. We can handle stains. However, chlorine and body oils left on your suit for an extended period of time can cause irreversible damage.

Your suit needs to be rinsed as soon as possible.

Before you take your suit off, after a long day of sunbathing or swimming, rinse yourself off with clean, cool water. The harsh chemicals your suit has been exposed to are already working to deteriorate the fabric of your suit.

Why are swimsuits so delicate to wash?

The fabric used to make swimwear has a high percentage of spandex. This makes the suit stretchy, perfect for a fun day at the pool. It also makes it very susceptible to damage if not cared for properly with gentle garment cleaning.

Hand wash your swimwear.

If you’ve never hand washed a garment before, swimwear is a great place to start. First you need to get special detergent. Only wash you suit with detergent that is formulated to gently clean stretchy fabrics. You can also use vinegar.

Whichever cleaner you choose, pour a capful of it into a sink full of cool water. Soak the swim suit for 30 minutes. Do not let is soak for much longer than half an hour. Rinse with clean, cool water.

Your suit is ready to dry!

How to dry your swimsuit.

Now that your suit has been washed and rinsed with cool water, it is time to dry. The best way to dry your suit is to roll it up in a clean, dry towel. Lay it flat, away from the sun, to let it finish drying. If you are in a hurry, a hair dryer set on a cool setting can be used to speed up the drying process.

A hairdryer is also a great way to get rid of sand.

Resist the urge to wring your suit out at all costs. It might seem like a good way to speed up the drying process, but it will stretch out the fabric.

Since swimwear is often made of spandex, it has the capacity to return to its original shape. A properly cared for suit will return to its original condition in 24 hours. It is a good idea to have two swimsuits while you are at the beach so you can give them a break.
