We’d like to add one more thing to this list: Stale laundry. At Hangers Cleaners we know how frustrating it is to have a clean garment smell stale. That’s why we use eco-friendly, odor-free cleaning methods. We’ll return your garments smelling and feeling fresh.

When you take your laundry out of the wash it should smell fresh and clean. If it smells stale or musty, here are some things you should consider.

1. How are you storing your laundry?

The washing machine might not be to blame when your favorite shirt smells a little musty. Storing laundry in a poorly ventilated closet will cause them to lose their fresh smell quicker. Consider freshening up your closet with some of your favorite good smelling cleaning products or keep your closet more ventilated with a fan.

2. Is your washing machine clean?

If you’ve read our other blogs, you’ve probably heard us talk about this issue a few times. It’s important to clean your washer every once and awhile. Not sure how? Here is a video from Scott with some easy instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geDR3XhxX00

3. Are you leaving your clothes in the washing machine long after the cycle is over?

It happens to the best of us. Life gets busy and we forget that we have a load of laundry sitting in the washing machine. This is the main cause of stale laundry. As your laundry sits in a damp enclosed washing machine, it gets that musty smell that requires some extra attention to get rid of.

Ready for some fresh laundry results? Here are a few hacks.

1. Use non-toxic household cleaners to kill the spores causing the musty, stale laundry smell.

Run the wash just like you normally would, but add vinegar. The vinegar will help kill the spores without harsh chemicals. You can also use borax or baking soda. We recommend you run this load with hot water. If you have garments that can’t be washed in hot water, run it on a cold cycle two or three times.

2. Use the sun to help freshen up your laundry and get rid of stale laundry smell.

The sun is your best friend when it comes to getting rid of laundry spores. Even in the winter, the sunshine will help eliminate spores and leave your laundry smelling extra fresh.

3. Use baking soda on stale laundry to freshen, not wash a garment.

Find your favorite shirt in the back of your closet smelling stale? It doesn’t necessarily need a wash. Dust the dry garment with dry baking soda and let it sit overnight. Brush it off in the morning and let it get some sunshine.
