Laundry Tips and Tricks #1 – Wine Stains

Shari Romes, our Hangers Cleaners Retail Manager, shows how to get rid of wine stains. The worst kinds are the ones that happen when wine gets onto white fabric. Check out the video on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/HangersCleanersAR/videos/839556546200233/

Here is a quick overview of this wine-stain-removal technique:

You will need a bowl. The size of this bowl should be large enough to have the stain sit over the top and be fitted with a rubber band. It should also be able to handle boiling water temperatures. Glass bowls are a good option.

Stretch your garment over the top of your bowl and secure it with a rubber band. Blot, don’t rub or scrub, the stain with a white cotton cloth. Cover the stain generously with salt. Make sure the entire stain is covered by salt. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

Next, pour boiling water over the salt-coated stain. Pour the boiling water carefully, from a distance of about 8 inches above the stain. This will give the water some force to remove the stain. Machine wash the garment on the hottest setting. Before drying, carefully observe the stain and make sure it is gone. If not, repeat the process.

The best way to respond to a wine stain is to act quickly. It’s important to remember to avoid scrubbing or rubbing the stain in any way, this will cause the wine to seep further into the fabric.

Laundry Tips and Tricks: At an outing? Club soda is one of the best wine-stain hacks there is. As soon as you spill wine on a garment, pour club soda on the stain. Treat the stain more thoroughly when you get home. Club soda keeps the stain from setting in. Club soda can help even after the stain dries.

Laundry Tips and Tricks #2 – Chocolate stains

When you were a kid, did your parents ever take extra precaution when it came to chocolate treats? When you are an independent adult, no one is around to police your chocolate intake.

No one.

When laundry day rolls around and you have a big chocolate stain on a garment, you start to appreciate all the precaution that was taken for you.

Here is how you remove a chocolate stain:

Remove as much chocolate as you can. A butter knife is a great impromptu laundry tool for this task. Make a solution of 1 part dishwashing liquid—we recommend blue Dawn—and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide. Coat the stain with the solution and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash like normal.

Laundry Tips and Tricks: If possible, run cold water or club soda over the stain as soon as you remove the excess chocolate. This will help loosen the remaining chocolate before being treated and washed.

Laundry Tips and Tricks #3 – Mustard Stains

Got a mustard stain that isn’t budging? Even if the stain has been there for a while, or gone through a wash cycle, there is still hope.

Here is what you can do:

Get a small glass bowl of 1 part water and 3 parts liquid laundry detergent. It’s important to saturate as much of the stain with this solution as possible. Rub the stain with your fingertips and let it sit for 10 minutes. Once the stain has been fully saturated with liquid laundry detergent, wash the garment like normal.
