Is It Time To Wash Your Pillows? (Hint: probably)

Let’s talk pillows. A good pillow is a key to a good night’s sleep. If your pillow isn’t the right amount of fluffy or firm, you could wake up—and possibly spend the whole day with—a crick in your neck. Are you sleeping on dirty laundry? Washing your pillows is key to maintaining their quality. You should be washing your pillow every three months.

As much as the team at Hangers Cleaners would love to see you every three months. We understand DIY efforts when it comes to dirty laundry. Here are a few tips for taking care of your pillows.

Tips for washing your pillow:

  • Check the care tag. To properly wash your pillow, you need to know what it is made of. A care tag will also give you other helpful information.
  • Your pillow can be washed in a washing machine if it is filled with natural materials, synthetic materials, Down, fiberfill, and even feathers (if there are no slits or tears in the pillow). If your pillow is filled with a foam material, it is likely not safe to wash in a washing machine. Look for instructions on how to keep your foam pillow clean.
  • Don’t have instructions? The team at Hanger’s cleaners can help! Stop by one of our convenient locations in Maumelle, Little Rock, and North Little Rock.
  • It is best to wash two pillows at the same time. Two pillows will have more balance as the washer spins. The two pillows should be the only thing in the washing machine.
  • If you have a top-loading washing machine, remove the agitator.
  • Use a small amount of detergent.
  • Run the washing machine on a delicate cycle. Repeat the rinse cycle for an hour after the delicate cycle has finished.

Tips for drying your pillow:

  • What is the secret for getting your pillows to come out of the dryer all fluffy? Clean tennis balls. Add a few tennis balls to the dryer with the pillows. They will fluff the pillows without damaging them.
  • Some pillows will need to lay flat to dry. Check the care tag.
  • It is very important that your pillow dries all the way through. Sensors in most dryers determine if the load is dry based on the surface. After the drying cycle, dry your pillows for an additional hour on moderate heat.
  • The sun is the ultimate pillow freshener. If your pillow smells musty or is losing its fluff, set it in the sun for a while. The sunlight will naturally keep your pillows fresh.
