4 TIPS FOR WASHING YOUR ACTIVEWEAR ON LAUNDRY DAY

When you think of high-maintenance garments, the last thing that probably comes to your mind is your activewear. It’s true! The high-tech fabrics many workout garments are made of require special treatment on laundry day. Treating them like your normal laundry can cause them to wear out sooner, lose their moisture-wicking properties, and even cause fabrics designed to protect you from harmful UV rays to lose their ultraviolet protection factor. Here are a few easy tips for how to clean your activewear from the team at Hangers Cleaners. 1. You may not have to Bring it to your Dry Cleaners, but you do need to wash your Activewear after each Workout. 

An alternative, optimistic outlook for this daunting tip: buy more activewear. Workout garments that are designed to wick moisture away from your body during a workout, have limits. Wearing them consecutively, without washing, will allow sweat to build up and compromise the fabrics ability to “wick”, which might lead to another trip to your dry cleaners. Good activewear is not cheap. By washing your workout garments with care, you are protecting your investment.

2. Wash Activewear Separate from your other Laundry.

There are a few special recommendations for active wear that will make their washing machine cycle a little different than your other laundry that you don’t bring to your dry cleaners.

  • Never use fabric softener. Fabric softener will build up on the high-tech fabrics most activewear is made of. It will prevent it from performing like it should and even cause it to retain odors. Once fabric softener has been used, several washes will be needed before your activewear will be softener-free again. Fabric softener also has a tendency to damage stretchy fabrics.
  • Turn your workout garments inside out before tossing them in the wash machine.
  • Use less detergent than you normally would for a load of the same size. Like the fabric softener, extra detergent will build up on the fabric. You can even buy detergent specifically designed for activewear, or ask your dry cleaners their recommendation.
  • Set your washing machine to a cold water cycle.

3. Have you heard about the Miracle that is White Distilled Vinegar?

Activewear cleaning tips like using less detergent, washing in cold water, and avoiding fabric softener might have you thinking: “How do I get rid of odor?” White distilled vinegar is the best way to rid your activewear of odors without damaging the high-tech fabric. Soak your workout garments in a solution of one part white distilled vinegar and four parts cool water for 15 to 30 minutes before you wash. The vinegar will act as a naturally deodorizing agent.

4. Dry your Activewear like you are not in a Hurry.

The best way to dry activewear is to let it air-dry. Like most high-maintenance fabrics, heat is your worst enemy. After your activewear has been through a cycle in the washing machine, make sure it does not smell like sweat. If it does, repeat the white distilled vinegar soak and throw it in the washing machine for another cold water, light-on-the-detergent wash. If you don’t have a great place to air dry your activewear, you can use your dryer’s lowest heat setting.
